Glossary of Terms

Admin group - the group of people who help to set up and coordinate the tools we use such as meteor and the wiki, help @michaelbernstein to collate milestone submissions so he can put together the weekly meetings, help write up each week’s milestones, and help him review the submissions and brainstorm how to keep folks excited and productive. Current admin include: @rajanvaish, @geza, @ranjaykrishna, @aginzberg, @dmorina, @neilthemathguy and @catherine.mullings

Amazon’s Mechanical Turk - an online labor market where requesters post jobs and workers choose which jobs to do for pay

Angular JS - a javascript framework

Boomerang - Daemo's reputation system

Balsamiq - a rapid prototyping tool

CHI - The ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems is the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction.

Contributor (also known as participant or researcher) - people who help to build Daemo

CSCW - The ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing is the premier venue for presenting research in the design and use of technologies that affect groups, organizations, communities, and networks.

Daemo - a self-governed crowdsourcing marketplace (our first version is live on daemo.stanford.edu ) (Or have a play around at daemo.playground.herokuapp.com)

Django - a Python web framework

DRI - directly responsible individual

DM - a 'direct message' sent to another contributor

GH - Google Hangout

HCI - Human Computer Interaction

macrotask - large task like Photoshopping vacation photos or mixing new song

MD - Google Material Design

Meteor - used for voting, evaluation and comments, for open-gov

microtask - small tasks like labeling machine learning training examples

Milestones - the task that are set each week. We sign up to these on Trello.

Open-Gov (also knows as op-gov, Open Governance)

Organization/Foundation

Organisational models - for-profit, hybrid, non-profit

Participant - contributors who help build Daemo

Ping - to message someone or mention their name in a post so they're notified of it.

Python - an object-oriented, high-level programming language

Prototype task - an intermediate feedback mode where workers can test each task's design and provide comments to help improve it

Reach out - ask someone or message them directly

Reputation System - the system whereby individuals are given ratings

Requester - employer at online crowdsourcing marketplace

Researcher - contributors who help build crowdsourcing marketplace

ShareLaTeX - an online LaTeX editor. We use this for collaborative paper-writing.

Slack - where we communicate. Topics of discussion are broken down into channels. ​There is a weekly google hangout meeting every Monday evening 8pm PST. Details are posted in the #announcements channel at meeting time for the link. During the weekly meeting chat along live on the #meetings channel. All meetings are available afterwards on YouTube for viewing.

 Current Channels
 #announcements  This is a one way only channel for announcements.  It's a way to get a quick update on current issues, meeting announcements, ideas/issues up for consideration.  This is NOT a discussion channel.
 #announcements-discuss THIS is where you can join in on any discussion of issues in the anouncements channel.   The discussion is kept separate so the announcements channel can remain a quick reference without posts getting buried in long discussions.
 #meetings The live chat channel for use during google hangouts only
 #general:  
 #random: off-topic place to share items of interest that are either amusing or not directly relevant to the platform development
 #updates: automated postings from integrated systems such as pr integrations on github etc.

Channels to come:

 #badges:  Don't worry about this just yet, but we do have a mechanism to acknowledge contributions and efforts of participants.
 #research-engineering:  Again this will come, but it is the area to discuss code contributions and other software development topics.
 #ogov-and-operations:  Discussion related to the operations and governance of the crowdsourcing platform we are building.
 #userresearch: Discussion relating to research on the UI/UX of the crowdsourcing platform.

Trello - a powerful task management tool. We post each week's milestone on weekly Trello boards.

UIST - The ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (UIST) is the premier forum for innovations in human-computer interfaces. Our UIST paper got accepted, read it for more details.
