Goal of this page

Presenting the way a newcomer could visualize his/her status and progress within a guild.

Problem statement

As shown by:

  • A simple observation and the use of most of the crowdsourcing platform
  • Testimonials from crowdworkers, crowdrequesters, including during our hangout during Week 2.

We have a starting postulate that current crowdsourcing platforms have a three-fold problem:

  • Crowdworkers have this impression to be just a little ring of the long keychain, and trapped into a productivist frame where they feel they need to over-work on a task, over-achieve, and chain tasks that are often not interesting them but that are more rewarding in terms of money than others. This race for profitability (time/money vs task) is hindering their professional and personal developmet.
  • It's very difficult for newcomers to enter this crowdsourcing work world.
  • Issue of reputation system, pressurizing crowdworker (rating, etc.) as explained in Milestone 2.
  • Issue of trust from the requesters to new crowdworkers.

Proposed guild system

1. General principle

Inspired by the aforementioned examples, adding a strong personal and professional development component to Daemo and our guild system. Having OR developing the right level/skills for a task AND/OR for a group responsibility, within the supportive environment of guild, will be the engine driving the whole system.

2. Awareness

People hear about the guild from:

  • prior to even registering to daemo, crowdworkers are aware that one of the added value/differentiation of our platform is the existence of guilds
  • they can inquire about guilds and even start to interact with the community, be on their radar, through guild websites/blogs/social media pages. Importance of decloisoner guilds from the crowdsourcing platform.
  • within daemo, the guild feature would have its own space. It can take many forms:

>>>> a tab next to home, contact, etc.

>>>> a sub-tab beneath a “social” tab (including a search engine to find crowdworker, interest groups etc.)

  • once they log in daemo, they have a phase where we are explaining to them the core features of the platform.

>>> can be fast, showing the main functions with info bubble on top of the UI, including the guild feature

>>> can be akin to a tutorial in games. Chosing a guild would pop as an option after 5-10 min of training (“hey, congratulations for having completed your first task (a fake one), do you know you can be a part of a group supporting you in your crowdworking? check out the guilds”).

3. Entry

3.1 Application

  • Favored method: recommendation. A guild-member vouching for someone from the outside.
  • Application

>>>> Daemo's guilds will usually have their website/social media pages (akin to game guilds) and will be able to apply, showing their background, their main expertise, credentials, etc.

>>>> Guilds will also have their "public" (aka, shown to non-members) page within Daemo, with their description and an application button.

  • Depending on their profiles (we should ensure that crowdworkers complete their profiles upon arrival), as well as their first task completed, guilds will be periodically recommended to the crowdworkers.
  • Crowdworkers will have a space to find guilds by fields, geographic location, and other parameters. Importance of creating a "guild taxonomy", like "reducing" guilds to main tags.

3.2 Selection

> Conventional method: members from the guilds would have "HR" responsibilities depending on their will, their rank (upper ranks would predestine the future of their guilds by deciding on who is entering or not). > Crowd-recruitment: members of the guild will receive notification each time someone is applying, they will have a certain amount of time (a few days) to chose to participate in the selection process. This could be a "HR" page, showing each new applicants (akin to people requesting access to a page on facebook and waiting for approval). Once enough guild members will vote for or against a new recruit, he/she will be notified of the crowd-decision.

4. First steps in the guild

4.1 levels

  • guild system has several ranks ("beginner", "crowdworker", "pro crowdworker", "elite crowdworker")
  • new recruits are eligible to the firsts. The last ranks are only through internal promotion.
  • emphasis on transparency. Each rank implies that one or several parameters are checked in terms of expertise, credentials, etc. This way, new recruits don't have over-expectations.

4.2 level upon entrance

  • new recruits will have starting ranks depending on various parameters, such as their level of expertise, of seniority in a field, their background, their crowdsourcing credentials (raising the question of crowdworking portfolios, certifications, etc.), their crowd-recruitment result (if they were barely selected, then they will enter at a lower rank like a trial period), if they have recommendations or not.
  • a complementary option is to pass "exams" to set the entry level once and for all. Could be "gold standard technique" and "calibration" systems from games and MOOCs (doing several "blank" tasks to gauge the level of a new recruit).

5 Guild Galactic Map

  • the heart of the proposed guild system, a hub to visualize where a crowdworker stands, where he starts, where he can go, how he can progress, etc.
  • it will take the shape of a star map, with the crowdworker at the center of the "Daemo galaxy"
  • the theme is customizable, the mechanics are the same but graphically, it could be a tree, or something else.

= 5.1 Experience in the galactic map

  • New guild members start at the core of the galaxy after a rather light selection process. The philosophy is to give everyone his/her chance as long as he/she can prove his/her worth. Meritocracy
  • Their level is 0, they can't do real tasks from requesters.
  • They have a series of mock tasks to complete before reaching the first level (represented in a light-pink circle), "apprentice".
  • They can chose between different tasks (tasks tree) to grant them some flexibility and freedom (a task could be more graphic, another text based).
  • They can chose a task by clicking on the blue diamond, unlocking a task in Daemo main page.
  • Once they reach apprentice level, they can tackle real tasks

>>>> this is a solution to several issues such as cold start, trust of newcomers, getting familiar with the guild (as level 0 can access to the guild chat/forum, interact with their peers, etc.)

  • Same organization than between level 0 and 1, an apprentice has to click on a blue diamond to chose a task and progress toward the rose second circle, in order to reach level 2, and so on.
  • the more you go outward, the more complex the tasks are, and the more they require trust between you and the requester.
  • several pathways (in the illustration, only one is developed, the northern one. We can imagine having the map filled with shapes of different colors, and the crowdworker would chose between a "simple task", "complex task", "hybrid task", "team task" or other pathways.

>>>> this allows crowdworker to be empowered in choosing a specialization.

  • Progression metric (points, XP), that you will gain each time you complete a task, engage with the guild, help your fellow members (this activity is tracked), participate in the forum, promote Daemo, etc.
  • The more you progress in the map, the more you approach a first circle surrounding the center of the map and multiple stars/stars clusters/constellations. This first circle represents the next rank for you.
  • Promotion is crowdworker driven. Once they reach each circle, they have to pass some kind of an exam (the yellow diamonds), mobilizing all what they have learned and what they need to master before tackling more complex tasks. Guild peers can also vet for you or decide that you need to train more.
  • The more you advance in ranks, the more you are trained, skilled, and trusted. Therefore, the price to hire you for requesters is more expensive, as well as the commission for the guild.
  • Requesters can have access to a public listing of the crowdworkers, their rank, their profiles, etc, to foster more interactions between Daemo and the guild (no "what happens in the guild, stays in the guild", we need links between guild and the outside-guild-world at least for visibility sake).

Responsibilities within the guild

  • Some of the moderately remote cosmic objects (here, the white crowns) will represent guild functions. Once you've reached the first circle and a certain rank, you can chose to click on the crowns, representing a new responsibility within the guild (recruiter, facilitator, business developer, officer, guild master).
  • this responsibility can be attributed automatically, or waiting for approval from your peers.

What we hope it will do

  • Adding a sense of professional and personal progression, of improvement, incredibly addicting, boosting commitment and productivity of the worker.
  • Solve the cold start issue. Beginners will have clear pathways from the start, they will know where to begin, where to go.
  • Solving issue of trust. Crowdrequesters will be able to see crowdworker skillmaps, what skills has been developed, how it was assessed and concretely applied, etc.
