Attend a Panel to Hear from Workers and Requesters

♦MTurk doesn't allow workers from India.

♦MTurk is difficult to use for the first time.

♦Pay wages are too less. you can not earn much in idle time.

Deliverable

Report on some of the observations you gathered during the panel.

Reading Others' Insights

Worker perspective: Being a Turker

1) What observations about workers can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦we as workers calculate our effort and pay of a hit.

♦Turkers do not want media interfering and ruining the freedom of crowdsourcing.

♦Turkers get involved emotionally when their hit gets rejected

2) What observations about requesters can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ As a requester you are supposed to have some basic money in order to post your job as a requester

♦ Interface must be modified

Worker perspective: Turkopticon

1) What observations about workers can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ there's no relation between worker and requester

♦ sometimes workers work gets rejected and requester does not specifies the reason behind rejection

2) What observations about requesters can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ when some worker accepts the hit posted by us as a requester he/she doesn't fulfill the requirements provided to qualify.

♦ quantification must be followed

Requester perspective: Crowdsourcing User Studies with Mechanical Turk

1) What observations about workers can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ workers expects the hits with higher money

♦ exciting to start with but later on interest looses as pay load is not satisfactory

2) What observations about requesters can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ Requesters can opt for more money less workers than less less more workers.

♦ requesters are supposed to give entire brief about the hits

Requester perspective: The Need for Standardization in Crowdsourcing

1) What observations about workers can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ It is difficult for worker to find an appropriate job.

♦ workers should be respected.

♦ Workers benefit from standardization in a way that, they get uniformly paid

2) What observations about requesters can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ there are different payment for same kind of work from different requester

♦ requesters can design the hit as per his requirement. i.e there is freedom to create a hit of your choice

Both perspectives: A Plea to Amazon: Fix Mechanical Turk

1) What observations about workers can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ HITs should be grouped according to the categories

2) What observations about requesters can you draw from the readings? Include any that may be are strongly implied but not explicit.

♦ complicated interface for requesters

♦ requesters hit must be categorized by the worker as liked or not liked

Do Needfinding by Browsing MTurk-related forums, blogs, Reddit, etc

List out the observations you made while doing your fieldwork. Links to examples (posts / threads) would be extremely helpful.

♦ some of the hits are so attractive that no one can ignore such hits once he got a glance on it..

like while i was working on MTurk sandbox i saw a hit with the payment of 230$ and the time limit
to complete that hit was surprisingly only 10 minutes. I was so excited about that particular hit
but as said nothing is as simple as it looks. the problem for that task is that it was not getting
accepted and it turned out to be a complete time waste.

Synthesize the Needs You Found

List out your most salient and interesting needs for workers, and for requesters. Please back up each one with evidence: at least one observation, and ideally an interpretation as well.

Bold text

It is the process of observing people to discover their needs, goals, and values

Bold text A great way to observe the users, is be one of them. Learn and perform their activities, so you get first hand experience. Observe all of the practices. Validate what you are observing with those observed as you go along.
