Workers face a huge problem regarding trust issues for being fairly treated amongst the big crowd of workers who select a task. There might be unfair treatment on the basis of payment given to the worker and the worker needs to be ensured that he is being paid fairly. To encourage the workers to work for a task and to make them believe that their payment will be done on time and as stated, there can be an introduction of milestones. In crowd research, we get milestones for every week; similarly the worker will get milestones for every day or two days.

An example:

A requester posts a HIT for a task and sets the time limit for the completion is 5 days and the payment for the same is $1. The worker will then get $0.01 credited to his/her virtual account on AMT, and for every milestone completed he/she gets $0.2. A virtual account for a worker is just a non-existing account present on the profile of a worker, which would be converted to an actual payment based on the terms and conditions, and completion of task, obviously if the worker only accepts the HIT and does not complete the task at all, no actual payment will be done and this will be informed to the worker before even accepting the HIT. Thus, when the worker submits the first milestone, the requester adds $0.19 to his/her account which sums up as $0.2, for every consecutive milestone, $0.2 is credited. If the worker does not submit a milestone on a given time limit, and the percentage of task completed is say less than 80% then the worker does not get the payment, but if the worker completes the task to it’s full, or even 80% then according to the statement of his/her virtual account on AMT, the requester pays them on the last day of the task completion. If the requester shows carelessness on any stage of the task, his/her rating will fall accordingly and it would get difficult for them to get HITs for their next tasks, and hence it would encourage requesters to be more careful with their role. Also, the partial payment of the task would ensure the worker that he/she is being fairly paid for their work. As additional features, the requester would also be given the liberty to decide the number of milestones for the task posted, the payment for each milestone would then depend on this, in our case, say the requester decides to divide his/her task into 5 milestones, then he pays $0.2 per milestone, and checks everyday till the 5th day for the completion of a milestone. We might have another requester who divides the work into 3 milestones, gives $0.1 on accepting the HIT, and then $0.3 on completion of each milestone. For better understanding, we can also let the requester decide that up to what percentage of work can the partial payment be done, but there can be bounds set, that the percentage should lie between 70%-90%, to ensure encouragement for both workers and requesters. Workers on AMT need to be made to believe that there are features to protect them from spammers as requesters, which take profit of their effort and do not pay them a penny. But on the other hand, if the worker shows carelessness on completing the milestone, then he/she will be down rated.

Summary of the Dark Horse Idea.

The implementation of such an idea is necessary because otherwise the workers would start to lose trust completely on the platform over a span of time. Also, for checking if the payment is done fairly, after the worker completes the percentage set the requester as the minimum set criteria, say for our case, it was 80%, then after this milestone, all the payments will be done to the actual account. Requesters on the other hand, should also be ensured that their role is easy and the workers are genuinely working. This can be handled by a feature that payment credited to the virtual account can be automatically based on the judgement made by the requester for the first submission. Say the requester finds the first submission by a worker 95% correct and 5% errors are mentioned as comments then it’s the responsibility of AMT to check the rest of the submissions and pay accordingly. The introduction of milestones ensures that the requester gets check whether the worker is genuine or not.

• Requesters might not want to spend so much time over a task of such a small payment, thus using powers of ten, we can increase the payment to about 10 times and make it $10 task, and hence it would be more encouraging for a requester to put some effort on a big task. This is because, if a task is priced $10 among many tasks that are of $1, $0.1 then it must be involving something more tedious than others. Thus, there can be automatic features as explained above where the requester can check the first submission and comment on it according to his needs and AMT from his comments can devise an algorithm to check the rest of the submissions accordingly for their correctness. This also ensures that the work submitted by workers is checked by requester at each level and hence there is no scope for incorrect submission getting paid even if they belong to the majority group.

• Requesters would also be apprehensive about this idea because they have to pay the requesters, even if, virtually, but there might be a big set of workers completing the task to 80% completion and not completely and still be paid, but this is just a way for the workers to be encouraged to complete the task next time to get the full payment. On the other hand, as from the requester’s point of view, 80% of his task is complete and the rest might not be such a big task to be completed and hence maximum amount of his/her work is also done simultaneously.
