Goal of this page

To expand and go deeper in the idea linking personal/prof development with crowdsourcing, especially the concept of guilds.

Problem statement (from Milestone 5)

As shown by:

  • A simple observation and the use of most of the crowdsourcing platform
  • Testimonials from crowdworkers, crowdrequesters, including during our hangout during Week 2.

We have a starting postulate that current crowdsourcing platforms have a three-fold problem:

  • Crowdworkers have this impression to be just a little ring of the long keychain, and trapped into a productivist frame where they feel they need to over-work on a task, over-achieve, and chain tasks that are often not interesting them but that are more rewarding in terms of money than others. This race for profitability (time/money vs task) is hindering their professional and personal developmet.
  • It's very difficult for newcomers to enter this crowdsourcing work world.
  • Issue of reputation system, pressurizing crowdworker (rating, etc.) as explained in Milestone 2.
  • Issue of trust from the requesters to new crowdworkers.

Proposed guild system

1. General principle

Inspired by the aforementioned examples, adding a strong personal and professional development component to Daemo and our guild system. Having OR developing the right skills for a task, within the supportive environment of guild, will be the engine driving the whole system.

2. Awareness

People hear about the guild from:

  • prior to even registering to daemo, crowdworkers are aware that one of the added value/differentiation of our platform is the existence of guilds
  • they can inquire about guilds and even start to interact with the community, be on their radar, through guild websites/blogs/social media pages. Importance of decloisoner guilds from the crowdsourcing platform.
  • within daemo, the guild feature would have its own space. It can take many forms:

>>>> a tab next to home, contact, etc.

>>>> a sub-tab beneath a “social” tab (including a search engine to find crowdworker, interest groups etc.)

  • once they log in daemo, they have a phase where we are explaining to them the core features of the platform.

>>> can be fast, showing the main functions with info bubble on top of the UI, including the guild feature

>>> can be akin to a tutorial in games. Chosing a guild would pop as an option after 5-10 min of training (“hey, congratulations for having completed your first task (a fake one), do you know you can be a part of a group supporting you in your crowdworking? check out the guilds”).

3. Entry

3.1 Application

  • Favored method: recommendation. A guild-member vouching for someone from the outside.
  • Application

>>>> Daemo's guilds will usually have their website/social media pages (akin to game guilds) and will be able to apply, showing their background, their main expertise, credentials, etc.

>>>> Guilds will also have their "public" (aka, shown to non-members) page within Daemo, with their description and an application button.

  • Depending on their profiles (we should ensure that crowdworkers complete their profiles upon arrival), as well as their first task completed, guilds will be periodically recommended to the crowdworkers.
  • Crowdworkers will have a space to find guilds by fields, geographic location, and other parameters. Importance of creating a "guild taxonomy", like "reducing" guilds to main tags.

3.2 Selection

> Conventional method: members from the guilds would have "HR" responsibilities depending on their will, their rank (upper ranks would predestine the future of their guilds by deciding on who is entering or not). > Crowd-recruitment: members of the guild will receive notification each time someone is applying, they will have a certain amount of time (a few days) to chose to participate in the selection process. This could be a "HR" page, showing each new applicants (akin to people requesting access to a page on facebook and waiting for approval). Once enough guild members will vote for or against a new recruit, he/she will be notified of the crowd-decision.

4. First steps in the guild

4.1 levels

  • guild system has 4 ranks ("beginner", "crowdworker", "pro crowdworker", "elite crowdworker")
  • new recruits are eligible to the first 3. The 4th is only through internal promotion.
  • emphasis on transparency. Each rank implies that one or several parameters are checked in terms of expertise, credentials, etc. This way, new recruits don't have over-expectations.

4.2 level upon entrance

  • new recruits will have starting ranks depending on various parameters, such as their level of expertise, of seniority in a field, their background, their crowdsourcing credentials (raising the question of crowdworking portfolios, certifications, etc.), their crowd-recruitment result (if they were barely selected, then they will enter at a lower rank like a trial period), if they have recommendations or not.
  • a complementary option is to pass "exams" to set the entry level once and for all. Could be "gold standard technique" and "calibration" systems from games and MOOCs (doing several "blank" tasks to gauge the level of a new recruit).

5 Guild galaxy map (RPG-inspired)

  • the heart of the proposed guild system, a hub to visualize where a crowdworker stands, where he starts, where he can go, how he can progress, etc.
  • it will take the shape of a star map, with the crowdworker at the center of the "Daemo galaxy"

5.1 Option 1

  • the map will be customizable depending on the type of guild, its focus, etc. A French-speaking guild existing only to gather french-speaking people, without a focus on a field, could chose to customize the galaxy map with 4 branches going out of the center, 1 for "simple quickly repeatable tasks", 1 for "complex tasks", 1 for "hybrid tasks", 1 for "team tasks". Those branches could be by field, by theme, by method, etc.
  • Crowdworker will chose what kind of task they want, progressing in the map.
  • The progression on the map can be automatic (depending on the task completed, stars will begin to shine or a fog will disappear) or by selection (i chose the "simple task" path, showing me corresponding tasks, that i need to complete, then it will unlock the following stars of the "simple task" branch)

5.2 Option 2

  • If this branch system is too complex, the galaxy map can simple show stars, stars clusters, constellations, etc.
  • The more i complete tasks, the more those cosmic objects will be highlighted/shine.

In both options

  • Progression metric (points, XP), that you will gain each time you complete a task, engage with the guild, help your fellow members (this activity is tracked), participate in the forum, promote Daemo, etc.
  • The more you progress in the map, the more you approach a first circle surrounding the center of the map and multiple stars/stars clusters/constellations. This first circle represents the next rank for you.
  • The more your progress, the more you can unlock complex task requiring more skill from you, and more trust from the requester.
  • Promotion is therefore automatic (once you reach the circle). Could be also manual, e.g., once you reach this circle, you will have to pass an exam, it could be doing a task of increased complexity. Your peer can also vet for you or decide that you need to train more.
  • The more you advance in ranks, the more you are trained, skilled, and trusted. Therefore, the price to hire you for requesters is more expensive, as well as the commission for the guild.
  • Requesters can have access to a public listing of the crowdworkers, their rank, their profiles, etc, to foster more interactions between Daemo and the guild (no "what happens in the guild, stays in the guild", we need links between guild and the outside-guild-world at least for visibility sake).

Responsibilities within the guild

  • Some of the moderately remote cosmic objects will represent guild functions. Once you've reached the first circle and a certain rank, you can chose to click on a star, representing a new responsibility within the guild (recruiter, facilitator, business developer, officer, guild master).
  • this responsibility can be attributed automatically, or waiting for approval from your peers.

6. Other ideas

6.1. Guild as a collective, supporting you

  • If i'm choosing a task that i can't complete (i find it boring, or it's not suited to my skill, or i have an emergency), another guild member can pick it up. The requester has a guarantee to have his task completed, while the fellow guild member will have bonus points for stepping in.
  • If there's a disagreement between me and a requester, other members of the guild can step in to do the requester work (if the disagreement isn't because of a bad behavior from him), while i would be partially compensated through the guild pool (from commissions on each work).

Use case: "Robert the Camembert"

- "Robert the camembert" is a 20 years old student in humanities, Paris based. His field passionate him, but he needs to work hard, for at least 4 years. He doesn't have the time to have a side-job, and he feels his discipline is a bit out of phase of the technology-driven era. A friend tell him about Daemo, and he is interested in gaining some money, adding a more techy experience on his resume, and learning.

- Robert download Daemo on mobile, follow a MMORPG inspired 10 min long tutorial allowing him to understand the platform, earn his first symbolic 2€.

- He is then prompted to complete his profile in, in exchange of an additional 2€ (or some fancy features like customization options of his interface, of his avatar, etc.)

- The guild system is then shown, with some recommendations.

- Robert, with the legendary curiosity of french cheese, wants to go beyond this algorithmic-driven suggestion, and click on the guild tab to search for a guild focused on the food industry.

- He finds "almighty carrot", a 4 months old guild with high reputation from the crowdworkers ("quality of life" akin to rate my job) and requesters, an appealing description, a nice picture, etc.

- He applies, his profile is already filled, he is just joining a cover letter as he feels his lack of credentials needs to be compensated by a highly enthusiastic and motivated letter.

- "almighty carrot" use crowd-recruiting system to approve Robert, to rank 1, "baby carrot" (yeah, you can customize the ranks!).

- Robert finds himself at the center of the galaxy, and begins his journey

What we hope it will do

  • Adding a sense of professional and personal progression, of improvement, incredibly addicting, boosting commitment and productivity of the worker.
  • Solve the cold start issue. Beginners will have clear pathways from the start, they will know where to begin, where to go.
  • Solving issue of trust. Crowdrequesters will be able to see crowdworker skillmaps, what skills has been developed, how it was assessed and concretely applied, etc.
