Experience the life of a Worker on Mechanical Turk

Reflect on your experience as a worker on Mechanical Turk. What did you like? What did you dislike? If you're from outside the USA and unable to access MTurk, try try the worker sandbox, or other sites like CrowdFlower or Microworkers or Clickworker.

As a worker on the Mechanical Turk platform, I enjoyed how easy some of the tasks were and how easily you could receive money; for example, one task simply asked for the company e-mail given its website. However, after a while, I realized how little money I was receiving, as I was only halfway to a dollar and was exhausted. If I were to change anything if I was a part of the platform, I would set a minimum amount of money you have to charge in order to get a HIT.

Experience the life of a Requester on Mechanical Turk

Reflect on your experience as a requester on Mechanical Turk. What did you like? What did you dislike? Also attach the CSV file generated when you download the HIT results. If you're from outside the USA and unable to access MTurk, you can try the MTurk requester sandbox, or CrowdFlower or Microworkers or Clickworker

Posted a task asking people to identify the first letter of some words for a cent. Unfortunately, no one responded, representing the frustrations requesters have of not receiving any HITs.

Readings

MobileWorks

  • What do you like about the system / what are its strengths?

The system's biggest strength is that it is available to a wide range of people, since the platform is on mobile phones rather than computers and the tasks are easier and not just for those experienced with computers

  • What do you think can be improved about the system?

In order to ensure further accuracy, a task should be distributed to more than two workers, as two workers may think in the same way.

Daemo

  • What do you like about the system / what are its strengths?

I really liked the idea of Boomerang, as it ensures that people will rate accurately, building an honest platform.

  • What do you think can be improved about the system?

I was not that impressed by the prototype tasks, as a small sample of people may lead to misleading results. Maybe another method could be used to ensure that your task leads to the results you want.

Flash Teams

  • What do you like about the system / what are its strengths?

I liked the idea of Foundry and how it matches people effectively so that tasks are completed more efficiently.

  • What do you think can be improved about the system?

Flash teams fail to ensure that quality results are obtained from the tasks like Daemo and Mobileworks aim to do. Without accurate results, a successful crowdsourcing platform cannot be made.
