Experience the life of a Worker on Mechanical Turk

I started my experience of worker with microworkers .Here are the pointers.

  • Advantages:

Most of the task in microworkers are simple and can be completed within 5 minutes. It mostly involves activities like visiting a blog or website, downloading apps, tweeting about something.I ended up completing task worth more than a dollar in an hour (considering a dollar in an hour is good on a mechanical turk). Tasks are quite organised and there are different categories based on region type of task you want to do.

  • Disadvantages:

Rating system for workers is questionable. User Interface is quite poor. Very few jobs are available

Experience the life of a Requester on Mechanical Turk

  • I created a simple survey task where the worker had to perform the following task:
  • I had listed out few premier league clubs(Chesea.Tottenham,Manchester United ,Manchester City ,Liverpool and Arsenal) and wanted the workers to vote for chelsea as their favorite club.

Well i wanted to perform two version of it one without payment and one with payment and see if workers come and perform the work without the interest of money.

Still waiting for complete results

Explore alternative crowd-labor markets

  • The most important difference between mechanical turk and taskrabbit is one must have some kind of skills or talent to perform the work (mostly physical) whereas in mTurk you don't have to be skilled at any of jobs you perform.
  • The second difference that i found was mTurk asks workers to perform a same job multiple times whereas taskrabbit requires group of individual to pour resources and skills together to perform a task.

What do you like about the system / what are its strengths?

  • The best thing about mobileworks is workers(users) can easily perform any job using a mobile (which doesn't have to be a smartphone). Moreover the task performed by workers are simple and not time taking, hence workers can complete a job any time during the day.

What do you think can be improved about the system?

  • This would be a great for school going kids who want earn money. But as suggested in the paper mobileworks wants to target the poorest of the poor where most of the people are not educated ,so tasks designed keeping in my mind that barely understand English would be helpful.

What do you like about the system / what are its strengths?

  • The best thing i liked about daemo is that it can solve the problem of reputation .While working with other crowdsourcing applications i found the reputation of a worker was neither monitored or analyzed. Daemo easily solves the problem through boomerang. The second thing was prototypes which allows requester to know about the task they are going to put forward.

What do you think can be improved about the system?

  • Prototypes might be an expensive way to solve the problem described in the paper where the requester hopes for great quality and workers expect to be paid .My idea would be to provide a continuous measurement of the job (quality) i.e. workers after completing the task provide a small feedback about the job and this can performed throughout the entire process.

Flash Teams

What do you like about the system / what are its strengths?

  • The flash teams are good way to solve complex tasks.
  • Experts could provide excellent results only in the case where specific set of skills are required .

What do you think can be improved about the system?

  • We have already worked on wisdom of crowds where we know that combined strength of the crowd can easily accomplish and produce better results than a group of experts.
