Experience the life of a Worker on Mechanical Turk
What did you like?
- A high number of hits were available for workers without qualifications
- Most tasks seemed quite simple and easy to do, the amount to be earned was also quite evident
- Approval rate was quicker than others
What did you dislike?
- I was able to work for a few hits on mturk however, later I recieved an email stating my worker status was not approved and I wouldn't be receiving anything!
- Usability wise, I found it tough to use
- The website itself looks very dated and unappealing. It could be visually designed much better
- Hits can be accepted if you click on hits in this group and that is not evident. It is frustrating without accept button upfront in the listing
- Search options are too small
- Too much time taken to find and finish appropriate hits
What do you think can be improved about the system?
- The layout should be more user friendly and visually appealing.
- The layout should follow design guidelines that ensure better usability and readability
- Repeated posts should be avoided.
Experience the life of a Requester on Mechanical Turk
What did you like?
- Nothing as Mturk sandbox closed my account and did not allow me to post
What did you dislike?
- Unable to post a request even to sandbox because mturk did not approve my account after I had already worked on hits
Explore alternative crowd-labor markets
Upwork
What did you like?
- Creating my profile was very simple and easy. I could add qualifications and choose the kind of area I wanted to work in
- Availability of Tests in order to help workers prove their qualifications and requesters to find genuine workers
- Worker can indicate availability and rate
- Features like time tracker to help resolve issues between requesters and workers
What did you dislike?
- Newbies are inherently stuck. Without certain qualifications , it is very tough to find a job
- Task effort is not taken into consideration when setting an amount
- Too much wait time for an account to be approved

Mobileworks
What do you like about the system / what are its strengths?
- Unlike Mturk, mobileworks is aimed at people whose literacy levels are lower. From a social pov, these people are more in need of the money and hence this is a very good platform for low level workers to earn money - Designed for low resolution cell phones and to work on slow data which enables users from various economic backgrounds to use the platform to earn money - Due to the ability to finish higher number of tasks, users could earn more money - High penetration in countries like India and in rural areas too
What do you think can be improved about the system?
- Quality rating system may discourage users who are not necessarily native english speakers, a low score can also decrease their reputation. This system must be looked into and consider various aspects before grading a worker
